Breeding is thinking in generations
Last weekend I closed a circle. It is no secret that I have a weak spot for Clicksem and Dinken. They both come from the same motherline. More information can be found here: https://www.horsemagazine.com/thm/2018/05/stamm-2294-an-emotional-journey/
I have already photos together with Dinken and also a very special photo with Diamant de Semilly, but the missing link between these two stallions is Diarado. Father of Dinken and son of Diamant de Semilly. Last weekend I finally had my chance to go on the photo with Diarado.
I would strongly recommend to try and visit the stallions you would like to use. At the same time I understand that it might be difficult for a breeder in Brazil to go and visit stallions in the Netherlands or France. But for the most breeders in Europe it should be possible to try and see the stallions you would like to use. The stallion presentation is Saint Lô in Normandy (France) in February is a good example of having stallions together from different Studbooks and countries. You can visit the stallions in the stable to get a good idea about their conformation.
At the same time it does not stop with looking at the stallion you would like to use for your mare. It is also very important to have an understanding of the further generations in a pedigree. In the Thoroughbred breeding they find it very important to take a close look at six generations behind a horse. To see what bloodlines are there, if they have a double on certain positive or negative ancestors. It is not only about performance in the first three generations because sometimes performance can skip two generations. The genetic make-up of your mare and the stallion you chose is very important.
Have a great breeding season!
